Trouble hand: Small Suited Connectors

Problem:
You were not winning as much as you should be with Small Suited Connectors (65s-32s), when we compared your win rate with the win rates of other APT users.

Description:
These connectors look tempting, but should often be discarded in most games. However they can occasionally be played from late position.

Cost:
$3.00 per hour in a $2/$5 No-Limit game

Recommendation:
Play 50 hands only being dealt Small Suited Connectors. Beware the danger of making your hand, but losing a big pot to a higher straight or flush. While this doesn't happen often, it is costly when it does.

Going to Flop Too Often

Problem:
You are playing too many hands.

Description:
You are seeing the flop more often than recommended. Not only is this costly pre-flop, but it can cost you post-flop by getting you into difficult situations with inferior hands.

Cost:
$4.00 per hour in a $2/$5 No-Limit game

Recommendation:
Play 200 hands and practice with an advisor who plays a solid game pre-flop. The advisor will appear for each hand pre-flop. Pay attention to what hands you should be discarding.

Trouble Position: Late Position

Problem:
You were not winning as much as you should be from Late Position (Cutoff,Button), when we compared your win rate with the win rates of other APT users.

Description:
This is the prime place to be at the table. In No-Limit Holdem, position is everything. From the cutoff, you can often raise to knock out the button and assure yourself the best position on all future streets.

Cost:
$2.00 per hour in a $2/$5 No-Limit game

Recommendation:
Play 100 hands from the Cutoff position. When folded to you, you should be raising to steal the blinds with a wide range of hands - for example, any hand with an Ace, any two broadway cards (A-K-Q-J-T), a King with a suited card, etc).

Trouble hand: Big Pocket Pairs

Problem:
You were not winning as much as you should be with Big Pocket Pairs (QQ-TT), when we compared your win rate with the win rates of other APT users.

Description:
These hands hold significant value, and should be played aggressively, especially on heads up flops. In a multi-way pot, pairs like TT often are played for set value.

Cost:
$2.00 per hour in a $2/$5 No-Limit game

Recommendation:
Play 50 hands only being dealt Big Pocket Pairs. If you automatically fold when an overcard flops, you are not playing this hand correctly.

Not Stealing the Blinds Enough

Problem:
You are not stealing the blinds as often as you should be from late position.

Description:
When everyone folds to you in late position, you are not attempting to steal the blinds often enough. This can be an easy source of profit, especially against weaker opponents. Even when you do get called, you will have position on them on the flop.

Cost:
$1.00 per hour in a $2/$5 No-Limit game

Recommendation:
Play 150 hands and practice from the cutoff position. When action is folded to you, try to widen the range of hands with which you try to steal the blinds. For example, any hands with two cards Ten or better would be good candidates.
