Not Ahead Enough Going to River

Problem:
You had an inferior hand too many times when going to the river

Description:
When the action ended on the turn, and you continued to the river, we kept track of how often you were ahead, adjusted for outs. You were behind too often, which is especially costly as the size of the pot (and therefore bets) gets bigger.

Cost:
$3.50 per hour in a $2/$5 No-Limit game

Recommendation:
Play 50 hands and practice being dealt medium suited connectors from the button. When they connect with the flop, these hands can occasionally call a flop bet in position. But rarely can one continue to the river when facing a bigger bet size and reduced implied odds.

Trouble hand: Premium Suited hands

Problem:
You were not winning as much as you should be with Premium Suited hands (AKs-ATs,KQs), when we compared your win rate with the win rates of other APT users.

Description:
These premium hands not only have high card value, but can make nut flushes or 2nd-nut flushes. And, when you make a straight with one of these hands (using both cards), it will always be the nut straight.

Cost:
$2.00 per hour in a $2/$5 No-Limit game

Recommendation:
Play 50 hands only being dealt Premium Suited hands. Flopping a flush draw plus overcards is a powerful hand that should be played aggressively.

Not Continuation Betting Enough

Problem:
You are not making continuation bets often enough on the flop.

Description:
Continuation betting is defined as betting on the flop (and sometimes turn), when you were the aggressor before the flop. If you only bet the flop when you hit your hand, you are missing opportunities to pick up the pot against weaker opponents who also missed the flop.

Cost:
$1.25 per hour in a $2/$5 No-Limit game

Recommendation:
Play 50 hands and practice being dealt AQ from early position. Since mathematically you will miss the flop twice as often as you will hit a pair, this will give you many opportunities to work on continuation betting more.

Trouble Position: Early Position

Problem:
You were not winning as much as you should be from Early Position (UTG,UTG+1), when we compared your win rate with the win rates of other APT users.

Description:
Only premium hands can be played from Early Position. Most drawing hands cannot be played, because often a raise will happen after you, leaving you with the unenviable choice between abandoning your initial bet, or paying even more to play out of position.

Cost:
$1.00 per hour in a $2/$5 No-Limit game

Recommendation:
Play 100 hands from the UTG+1 position. As a general rule, enter for a raise with premium hands, discard all others.

Trouble hand: Monster Pocket Pairs

Problem:
You were not winning as much as you should be with Monster Pocket Pairs (AA-KK), when we compared your win rate with the win rates of other APT users.

Description:
These are the best hands in Hold’em, but they also need to be played with caution in a deep stacked game, especially on the later streets, when the pot gets big.

Cost:
$1.00 per hour in a $2/$5 No-Limit game

Recommendation:
Play 50 hands only being dealt Monster Pocket Pairs. Remember that when the pot gets big, your one pair may not be the best hand any more.
