We're in Montreal playing a little poker at the Playground and Casino Montreal. Last night we discovered that Verizon FIOS won't let us access our DVR in Canada. We're going to have to wait until Monday to see any ESPN Main Event coverage. If anyone wants to fill us in on the early action, we'd love to hear it!

I have now seen Day 1a of the ESPN coverage and I have to say I am not loving it. It feels very unprepared and fly by night (especially as the machine keeps failing to pick up players' cards) and just feels like they've moved to this format to save money. I miss the coverage of the thousands of players who are not famous. I miss the packages.

Maybe I'll get used to the new format, but after day 1, I am not a fan.

The ESPN coverage has definitely had more technical glitches than ideal ("How can he raise with K-7 off with an all in in front of him? Oh, graphic changed, it's actually AK.") and the lag in revealing someone has folded and where the action is pre-flop is distracting. What I do think is nice for actual poker players, is you get to see most of the hands at a table in that episode in real time, not just interesting hands edited, and not just at a final table. We're getting a nice sense of how this mid-tournament action plays. Some nights have been more interesting than others - last night's Hellmuth table not as compelling as the Selbst first day or the Polk table on Tuesday - but that is part of the package.

Jury is still out for me on the trade-offs of the slick edited versions show weeks after they occur versus this more real time unedited content.

And why no Day 3 coverage on ESPN? Seems odd...
