How to Win in APT without play a hand?

I puzzled by this... last night tournie is 4 of us at final table... 3 of us fight hard each hand and chips go back and forth, finally is just 3 remain... during the entire final table round one player was "sitting out" never played one hand... yet he end up coming in 2nd...
how that possible and is that fair? Can't the software remove a player who sits out so many rounds?

This happens quite a bit in online tournaments (and sometimes live ones as well). Generally, players are only eliminated in tournament structures if they do not take their seats by a certain blind level. If however they have played some hands and have built a stack they can sit out and sometimes still reach the cash stage. You see this quite a bit in satellite tournaments but not as often in regular MTT's. It can be frustrating but its just part of the game.

Many tables will attack the sit-out and speedily take his/her blinds and antes in an informal cooperation. Doing so explicitly would be collusion and against the rules. If you are on a table that isn't doing this, simply adjust your strategy to take into account the dead money and undefended blinds/antes.

You also have to remember that this is a site without any monetary considerations and some people may decide to leave a game for any number of reasons.
