Not Winning Often Enough at the Showdown

Problem:
When you go to the showdown, you are not winning as often as you should be.

Description:
We noticed that when you go to the showdown, you do not have the best hand as often as our most winning players would. Some of these hands that you showed down should have been discarded on the turn or river.

Cost:
$11.25 per hour in a $2/$5 No-Limit game

Recommendation:
Play 100 hands and practice being dealt hands that are mostly playable, at least for a single bet. Before going to the turn or river with one of these hands, give some additional thought to whether the hand is strong enough to win in a showdown (especially if the pot is going to be big).

Trouble Position: Late Position

Problem:
You were not winning as much as you should be from Late Position (Cutoff,Button), when we compared your win rate with the win rates of other APT users.

Description:
This is the prime place to be at the table. In No-Limit Holdem, position is everything. From the cutoff, you can often raise to knock out the button and assure yourself the best position on all future streets.

Cost:
$5.00 per hour in a $2/$5 No-Limit game

Recommendation:
Play 100 hands from the Button position. When folded to you, you should be raising to steal the blinds with a wide range of hands - for example, any hand with an Ace, any two broadway cards (A-K-Q-J-T), a King with a suited card, etc).

Not Playing Aggressively Pre-Flop

Problem:
You are calling too often pre-flop, instead of raising.

Description:
Compared to how often you are limping (just calling the big blind), you are not raising enough. This is allowing your opponents to see the flop cheaply, with inferior hands.

Cost:
$4.00 per hour in a $2/$5 No-Limit game

Recommendation:
Play 50 hands and practice being dealt only raising hands.

Trouble hand: Small Pocket Pairs

Problem:
You were not winning as much as you should be with Small Pocket Pairs (55-22), when we compared your win rate with the win rates of other APT users.

Description:
In typical games, these can only be played profitably from late position. Average players often lose money with this hands by playing them too often.

Cost:
$1.00 per hour in a $2/$5 No-Limit game

Recommendation:
Play 50 hands only being dealt Small Pocket Pairs. Except in loose passive games, you shouldn’t be limping, then calling a pre-flop raise out of position.
