Player Mix - Specific Players

apt_gs

I would like to be able to practice against specific players in specific positions. For example, there are certain players for whom I seem to have problems with when they are on my left, others when they are on my right. I would like to be able to select those players and put them in a specific position relative to me so that I can practice against them. Is that possible to do?

Hi - sorry for the delay in responding.

Right now, that isn't something that is an option in the game. The biggest hurdle on this isn't as much being able to do it (we could) - it's being able to do it without making things more confusing. I just have no idea how we could simply put that option into the game without mucking things up - the options screen is completely full already, as is the game itself and there are hundreds of bots.

We are working on something that we'll release soon that is a bit of a scenario trainer that I think you'll enjoy because it will drill you on specific situations, some of which are similar to what you are talking about.

The large majority of people who quit using our site tell me the reason is that there are too many options and it is too confusing. They just want to play hands without having to figure out how to set it up. We try to have good instructional videos, but the large majority of our customers don't want to watch that - they just want to play. For a while we were tracking the use of features on the site, and we were surprised to see that about 80% of our features are used by only 1% of our members. The other 99% just play the game, click through on the training plan, play some beat the pro challenges, and change almost nothing in the game settings. Fewer than 1/3 of our members have ever used their training plan - that's how much most people just want to use the game to play hands without changing any settings. So when we met last time and discussed opening the game up to more customization like you talk about, we came to the conclusion that it would just make the game more confusing, and that would cut down on the number of people using the game.

    I hope that makes sense.

Thanks Allen. It makes sense. I, for one, prefer options. I suspect that if you looked at the subset of users who join and stay, you will find that those are the ones that use a significant # of the available features. For those who don't want options, I guess you could give them the one-time choice to click default. I will definitely check out the scenario trainer when it comes out - something to look forward to.

I wonder if you couldn't add a choice for after you log in to either just play a game with just one click or go to all the options

you know kinda like the emergency power saving on computer and phones lol...

I wonder if this would help with the masses with simplicity while still able to get very detailed for the one percent that loves it like me lol....more options the better

that way all the new users would never get confused...all they would have to do is log in and just click go to game. they then could just play in a random game for fun.

the other option could be called advanced or something like that and that would take you to the buffet menu of options like I enjoy

That seems like a reasonable approach. Probably the thing that I like the most about APT is the ability to tweak things to get them to match the lives games that I encounter. That's why I would like to be able to select certain players and put them on my left so that I could practice against that style.

I really don't see us ever adding in the ability to put specific players in specific positions- there are just too many of them. I'll let Steve comment on the possibility of putting player types in certain positions. I can definitely see the value in it, but I also know how hard it would be to set up because interface changes are very difficult at this point.

I'll talk to our team about it and give it some thought, but I can't promise anything on this one too soon. We are really working on some amazing new tools and I don't want to get too sidetracked.

Thanks Allen, Thanks Steve. I appreciate both of you responding and sharing with us the issues involved and I can certainly relate about not getting sidetracked.

To second what MagicJack said "I can't wait for the new tools."

The site it great and continuing to improve

I think that extra options are useful.
I understand that keeping things simple is important for beginners but you could hide those advanced options behind "Advanced" button.
I have been to many poker training sites but I usually don't stick around and get bored/discouraged quickly.
So far I love APT but it needs more advanced options.

@stumbras I like the idea of moving some of the more confusing features behind an "advanced" button.

Although a lot of the more advanced features are just "there" and don't need to be chosen specifically - a lot of more complex stats are hidden inside the brain button if you haven't dug around that yet.
