Are the live MTT's for paid members only or are they available for free? I'm wondering because the level of play I've seen is well below anything I've encountered aside from at play-chip poker sites. Not complaining, just wondering. I had thought it would be a fun way to practice against people who were trying to improve their games but what I saw doesn't match up with those types of people.
Examples, UTG+1 flatting UTG open raise with A10o, MP opening 10/3s and flatting a 3-bet, A6o opening UTG and calling a shove, K5o defending SB with a flat. None of these plays would come from anyone practicing here I wouldn't think.

Anyone can play in the tourneys, but most of the regulars are full members of APT. Overall, I think the play is reasonably similar to how a lot of people play in live tourneys - there is a lot of unusual play in most of them. However, since there isn't any cash on the line, you are going to see some people do some pretty outrageous things and be more risky with their money.
Thanks @AllenBlay . Small sample size so far for me but it certainly was confusing to see some of that. It definitely reminded me of lower stakes play-chip tournaments but I'll try a few more out and see what happens. Certainly didn't mean to gripe - just looking to get practice vs live players. IMO, play chip sites aren't realistic at most "stakes" and I don't want to experiment in cash MTT's if I have other options.
BTW, did I see you write something in another post about the perceived value of play chips vs cash? This is a subject I am very interested in and would love it if you had any reference material you could point me to on the subject. I am wondering how far game theory can be used to explain behavior with risks/rewards that are only perceived rather than real. Thanks in advance for any direction you can give me.
Just finished another one and it was much better. I probably ran into some weird play over a very small sample size of hands when I 1st posted. Good play and good sportsmanship made for good practice today. I can see this as being a useful tool.
Congrats to @22tango for kicking my butt heads-up for the win.
1warlock I played in a live tourney and 3bet utg +1 opener with AKs from cutoff. He set me allin. I called. He spiked a 6 with A6o.
At Venetian I open QQ utg get 3bet from MP1. All others fold. I 4bet ship 90 bigs. Villan calls. Spikes an Ace. Sheepish about showing 2nd card. ( to win you must show 2 cards). Its a 6! Called allin with A6o.
Not just sharing bad beats. Understand. You ARE playing against real players. Players will do these plays and it's great. That is why poker is profitable.
highfive - quite true. However, I was expecting a bit less of this when playing practice tournaments vs other players who are also working on their fundamentals. I have seen so many players overvalue weak-A's over the course of the years that I've lost count. A good percentage of the players out there think A's are magic. They are both a blessing and a curse to play against. The theory is we make money off these people in the long-term but most of us don't actually have a statistically significant long-term in poker. Therefore it might be more realistic to claim that the field profits off these players.
